How to Make a Baby Blanket Without Using Anything

This post will teach you how to stitch a double-sided baby blanket. It's the easiest and softest baby blanket you can make, and you tin tackle this project even if you have only beginner sewing skills!

How to sew a double-sided baby blanket

I made my first baby blanket dorsum in…2015, I recollect? My friend Caroline was expecting her second little girl, and so I decided to try my mitt at my first babe-themed sewing project. This project was really special because Caroline is such an amazing friend to me—and she kicked off my obsession with making double-sided infant blankets for my friends who are expecting!

I have since made 5 blankets, including for my own daughter, but I haven't photographed whatever of them. Until the one I merely made for my friend Erin, who is another very onetime friend. We really went to kindergarten together. I can't wait for R to be the cool older friend who buys her kid beer when R is 23 and her child is 20.

Just back to the babe blankets. Here is the get-go one I e'er made—for Caroline's daughter dorsum in 2015. Information technology'south a simple arroyo.

Easy baby blanket tutorial

I don't claim to be a seamstress of any sort. Or even someone who is really that good at sewing. Just baby blankets are so like shooting fish in a barrel to make that even I tin exercise it. I know my way around a sewing machine, just merely when it comes to really easy project. And this is one of those. If you lot can run up in a reasonably straight line, you can sew this double-sided babe blanket.

How much fabric do I demand for a baby blanket?

I have made all of my babe blankets roughly the same size: xxx inches by 40 inches. Though you can definitely make them smaller, which is what I did for the latest i that I photographed for this tutorial. Information technology's probably more like 28 inches past 35 inches. Babies are small-scale. 🙂

I bought 1 g (36 inches) of each type of fabric I used: i thou of the animal print fabric, i yard of the solid greyness flannel, and 1 k of the soft cotton batting. The soft cotton fiber batting really came pre-cutting to ane yard in a purse, and then you lot'll have very little waste. Make sure to pre-wash and dry everything so yous get whatever shrinkage out of the mode!

What is the all-time material to make a baby blanket out of?

I recommend popping over to your local Jo-Ann fabric (or similar, depending on where you alive) and checking out the plant nursery flannels. While some of the super minky-soft fabrics and stretchy fleeces are really, really tempting, I don't recommend using those if yous are a beginner.

That's because stretchy knits are much harder to sew together. They can get caught up in your machine and requite you a lot of hassle if you don't have the correct type of needle and human foot for your sewing machine. Instead, the thin plant nursery flannels work great. They don't accept much stretch and are very like shooting fish in a barrel to cut and sew.

So here's what I used.

  • Soft flannel nursery fabric; I purchased ane yard of a decorative fabric and 1 yard of a gray fabric for the dorsum
  • 1 yard of % cotton fiber batting; this is the verbal kind I used
  • Sewing automobile
  • Scissors, measuring tape, marker, sewing pins

And here's my easy double-sided baby blanket tutorial!

Step 1: Cutting the pieces

Cutting three pieces of cloth at your desired dimensions. As discussed higher up, 30 inches by 40 inches is a bang-up size for a baby blanket. That's the size about of mine have been, but my contempo one was a few inches smaller. The starting time piece is your decorative/main fabric (the creature print fabric). The 2d slice is the back slice (my greyness piece). The last is the interior batting.

Since information technology tin can exist hard to cut in a straight line, I recommend using a thou stick or another long straight edge to draw your cut line. You lot can also use a rotary cutter, which makes things a bit easier. If you take a pattern on your fabric like I exercise, you may want to lay your patterned fabric out fabric side up to visualize where you lot want to cut.

After you've cut all of your pieces, lay them on summit of one some other like this. It seems weird, but trust me! And recall, the interior batting layer doesn't take a right and wrong side, so don't stress also much about that. The back piece too might not accept a right and wrong side depending on what you choose.

Step ii: Pin fabric in place and sew

Carefully line up all the corners equally best yous can and pin the textile in place. I similar to put an ballast pin that goes down through the middle of all three pieces. Then I put pins around the edges.

Sew a straight seam all the mode around your fabric, leaving nigh six inches open up anywhere in the seam. The easiest area to do this is probably an area that butts up confronting a corner. This is where you'll flip the coating correct-side out.

When y'all've finished sewing the seam, prune the corners, which will give you sharper corners. Maybe sure you don't clip the line you sewed, though! (Yep, I have done that when making pillow covers…more than once.) You can also trim the excess fabric from around the perimeter of the blanket.

Pace iii: Plough right-side out and pivot the small opening shut

Carefully flip the coating correct-side out by pulling information technology through the five-inch opening. Don't be discouraged if the fabric doesn't want to give. Merely slowly work it through. Once it'due south right-side out, gently poke the corners out and so that they are clean-looking.

Find the 6-inch opening you lot pulled the coating through, fold it in to hide the ragged cut and pin shut. You might need to trim the batting a bit to get a bang-up fold. If you're having a hard time getting it to stay bully, you lot can apply an iron to printing the folded seam area (just sentinel that you don't get the iron on the pins—they'll get hot).

Step 4: Sew the opening shut and stitch a seam round the blanket's entire perimeter

Sew shut with a directly stitch. This seam volition exist visible from the exterior, so to hide it, I like to sew a French seam all the style around the perimeter of the blanket. This ensures the opening is sewn securely shut while likewise adding a sort of decorative trim.

What'due south a French seam?

Information technology sounds fancy, and it'due south totally non. When y'all flip the coating correct-side out, the raw edges of the cloth are hidden on the inside of the blanket. But the edge doesn't wait very polished. A French seam is merely sewing a straight seam all the style around the perimeter of the blanket to enclose the raw border of the cloth on the inside of the coating.

It gives the outside of the coating a apartment, neat, and polish expect. See the difference hither? The starting time blanket beneath is just a blanket flipped right-side out. The second photo has a French seam sewn around the edges of the double-sided baby coating.

You can come across the regular seam on the commencement baby coating I fabricated. I did not exercise the additional "French" seam effectually the perimeter of the blanket for this ane.

And here's the finished double-sided baby blanket

That's it! Really, it's that piece of cake to make a thoughtful, applied gift for your buds who are expecting. This blanket is likewise machine washable, and you can put it in the dryer, so it's easy to take care of. I wouldn't dare give any new parent something that couldn't be easily motorcar washed.

I as well accept a simple tutorial on making burp apparel, which would exist a perfect coordinating gift to make with the scraps leftover from the blanket. I have a mail service about my daughter's modern neutral nursery yous might like as well!
